Student Recreation Center Rules

To ensure a safe, respectful and enjoyable environment for all, all patrons must follow the rules outlined below. 

Failure to comply may result in removal from the facility and/or loss of membership privileges.

General Rules

A valid Montclair State University ID or membership is required for entry

  • Faculty, staff and alumni must purchase a membership or day pass
  • Members may sponsor up to two guests at a time. View additional guest rules below.
  • Unauthorized personal training or fitness instruction is not permitted
  • Towels are required in all activity areas (limit two per patron)
  • Bags and coats must be stored in lockers or cubbies
  • Lockers are for day use only unless rented
  • Cell phone use, food and carbonated beverages are only allowed in lounge areas

Any student or member found violating the proper ID policy and/or attempting to sneak non-members into the Student Recreation Center will be subject to a one week minimum suspension of their rec access privileges.

Lost Something?

Check the area you last saw your item and ask a building manager if they have seen it. You can also check Equipment Checkout to see if anyone has turned in your lost item, which will be held for 60 days before being discarded or donated.

Please Note: Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Lost keys will be returned to University Police daily.

Photo and Video Not Permitted

To protect the safety and privacy of all patrons:

  • Photography, video recording and video chatting are strictly prohibited in the facility
  • Use of cameras or phones in locker rooms or restrooms is a serious violation

Violations may result in a minimum one-week suspension and referral to the University Conduct Office.

Athletic Attire and Hygiene

Proper athletic attire is required in all activity areas.

Required

  • Athletic tops
  • Athletic bottoms such as shorts, pants, leggings or skorts
  • Athletic footwear (sneakers only)

Not Permitted

  • Jeans or non-athletic clothing
  • Clothing with zippers or belts
  • Crocs, boots, cleats, open-toed shoes or shoes with wheels
  • Bare feet

Protect Your Skin at the Gym

To promote hygiene and reduce the spread of illness we encourage all students and members to wear clothing that provides skin coverage when possible and clean equipment before and after use.

Fitness Area Rules

The Student Recreation Center features multiple fitness spaces across two floors, each designed for different types of workouts.

  • Free weights, racks and lifting platforms
  • Functional training spaces
  • Cardio equipment including treadmills, ellipticals and bikes
  • Selectorized machines and additional training equipment
  • Proper athletic attire is required
  • Wipe down equipment after each use
  • Return all weights to designated areas
  • Do not drop or slam weights
  • Do not lean weights against walls or machines
  • Chalk is not permitted
  • Coats and bags must be stored in lockers or cubbies
  • Unauthorized personal training is prohibited
  • Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items

Additional Guidelines

  • Use a spotter when lifting when possible; if unavailable, use weight collars
  • Be mindful of others and share equipment during busy times

  • Items may be purchased using Red Hawk Dollars, cash or credit ($10.00 minimum for credit transactions)
  • Safety goggles must be worn when playing racquetball

Gymnasium

  • No food or drinks allowed in the gym
  • Athletic attire and non-marking shoes required
  • No cell phone use
  • No dunking or hanging on rims or nets
  • No changing clothes in the gym
  • Personal music is not permitted
  • Equipment must be returned 15 minutes before closing

Guest Rules

Guests must:

  • Be sponsored by an active member
  • Present a valid government-issued photo ID
  • Remain with their sponsor at all times
  • Guests must be at least 16 years old to access most areas (excluding the pool)
  • Guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian

Multipurpose Rooms

  • Personal belongings must be stored in cubbies
  • Non-marking shoes only
  • Equipment use is limited to scheduled activities
  • Rooms may not be used without a reservation 

Pool Rules

  • Must be at least five (5) years old and toilet trained
  • Guests must remain with their sponsor at all times
  • Shower before entering the pool
  • Lifeguards have full authority over pool use
  • No running, pushing or unsafe behavior on the pool deck
  • No use of the pool under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Only U.S. Coast Guard-approved flotation devices are permitted
  • Swimsuits or appropriate swimwear only
  • Gym clothes or jean shorts are not permitted

Patrons who do not meet attire requirements may be asked to leave activity areas.
 

  • The pool will close during lightning
  • It will reopen 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning
  • Follow lifeguard instructions at all times
  • Remain with the group during evacuations

Track Rules

  • Proper athletic footwear required (non-marking, non-cleated)
  • Sprinting is not permitted
  • No stopping or standing on the track
  • No spitting
  • Stretching must take place in designated areas

Follow directional flow:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: Clockwise
  • Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday: Counterclockwise

Lane Use

  • Inside lane: Walking
  • Outer lanes: Jogging
