Student Conduct

Student Conduct operates within the Dean of Students Office and Division of Student Development and Campus Life (SDCL) through a compassionate, ethical and educational process which promotes accountability, reinforces community standards, and supports student success. Student Conduct collaborates with campus partners across the University to support fair and appropriate resolutions to concerns and conflicts within the University community.

The conduct process provides accountability with empathy, prioritizing student well-being, learning and success in philosophy and in practice. Through the conduct process, students are empowered to advocate for themselves and are challenged in developmentally appropriate ways to reflect on how their decisions impact their goals and others in the community.

Student Conduct approaches each student and situation holistically, balancing individual accountability with the needs of the larger community. Students are supported through meaningful conversations, educational interventions and resource referrals that promote learning and responsible decision-making. Our aim is to create opportunities for students to learn from their experiences, develop stronger decision-making skills, repair harm when appropriate and become stronger members of a community.

What We Do

• Review and resolve alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct
• Address behavioral, academic and student organization misconduct
• Promote accountability through an educational approach
• Support student learning, growth and decision-making
• Foster and maintain a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment that supports student well-being, belonging and community standards. 
• Provide support and help resolve concerns of all Student Conduct stakeholders (faculty, staff, students, and community partners)
• Safeguard student due process rights by ensuring that students receive a consistent and equitable process
• Ensure that students are treated with dignity and respect in the conduct process
• Make decisions rooted in University policy and provide clearly articulated rationales that students can understand, even when they disagree with the outcome 
• Connect students with campus resources that support basic needs, well-being and academic success 
• Collaborate on the creation and continuous review of data-informed policies which support both the Montclair and Bloomfield campus communities.

Students who engage in behavior that does not align with the Code of Conduct may be subject to University action.

Student Conduct works closely with campus partners, including Residence Life and University Police, to uphold community standards and ensure a safe and respectful environment.

The Conduct Process

The student conduct process is how the University reviews and resolves concerns related to student behavior.
This process is:

• Educational: We focus on learning and personal growth
• Developmental: We encourage reflection and better decision-making
• Fair and consistent: We ensure an equitable experience for all students

While outcomes may include disciplinary action, cases are resolved through conversations and reflection meant to support your success.
