Academic & Administrative Support
When life gets in the way, navigating university processes can feel overwhelming. The Office of the Dean of Students can help you understand your options, connect with the right offices and work through situations that may impact your academic experience.
We can assist with:
- Medical withdrawals
- Course withdrawal exceptions
- Grade grievances
- Extended absences due to illness or emergencies
- Pregnancy and parenting accommodations
- Dean Certifications and disciplinary record requests
- Referrals to academic, financial and student support resources
- Questions about university policies and procedures

Student Absence Support
We support students experiencing extenuating circumstances that impact class attendance.
What Qualifies
- Prolonged illness or chronic health concerns
- Hospitalization
- Family emergencies
- Fire or flood emergencies
- Military deployment
Please Note: Routine medical appointments, transportation issues and vacations do not qualified.
What to Expect
- Submit documentation to the Dean of Students Office
- Documentation is reviewed and validated and if approved, faculty are notified
- Students are to follow up directly with professors on coursework
Pregnancy Support
Available support includes:
- Academic accommodations
- Counseling and health services
- Lactation spaces
- Referrals to community resources
Students and faculty work together to create a plan that supports continued academic success.
Dean Certifications & Disciplinary Records
You may need a Dean Certification or Letter of Good Standing for things like transferring schools, studying abroad, graduate or professional school applications and employment or background checks.
Important To Know
- Authorization is required for all requests
- Submit forms at least 7–10 business days before deadlines
- Academic records (such as GPA and transcripts) are handled by the Office of the Registrar

Our Recommendations
- Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS): Available to all students, 24/7.
- Student Health Center: Appointments are encouraged!
- Register a service or support animal: The Disability Resource Center can help you get the correct forms to fill out so your pet can be approved on campus and in the residence halls!
Basic Needs & Financial Support
- Free Clothing: Check out Rocky’s Closet for both personal and professional attire.
- Food Assistance: We have a food pantry available on both Montclair and Bloomfield campuses! Questions about NJ SNAP and WIC? Ask us!
- Scholarships: The University is proud to partner with ScholarshipUniverse to search for internal and external scholarships. We also have textbook and tuition scholarships available.
