Emergency Medical Services

Montclair State University Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a volunteer, student-run organization that has served the campus community since 1998. Staffed by certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), EMS provides basic life support, prehospital emergency medical care and ambulance transportation to local hospitals. EMS operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring that students, faculty, staff and visitors have access to immediate emergency care at all times. In addition to emergency response, EMS supports the broader community through CPR and First Aid training and provides medical standby services for events across campus and the surrounding area.

Montclair State University Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a volunteer, student-run organization that has served the campus community since 1998. Services and Support

  • Emergency Medical Response: Immediate, on-campus response to medical emergencies, supported by mutual aid partners when needed.
  • Ambulance Transportation: Safe and efficient transport to area hospitals.
  • Training and Education: CPR and First Aid certification courses for campus and community members.
  • Event Standby Coverage: On-site EMS presence for events such as athletic competitions, concerts, carnivals and large gatherings where there may be increased risk.

Join EMS!

EMS is a volunteer organization of full-time Montclair students who are committed to service, leadership and professional development. The organization welcomes both certified EMTs and a limited number of non-certified students.

Students who join EMS gain hands-on experience in emergency response, strengthen their communication and leadership skills and contribute directly to campus safety.

To support increased demand for emergency services, EMS partners with the Office of Residence Life to offer the Resident EMT Program, which expands coverage during evenings and weekends.

Each year, a select group of resident EMTs live in designated apartments in The Village and receive a housing waiver in exchange for their service.

Responsibilities Include

  • One overnight on-call shift per week (11 p.m. - 8 a.m.).
  • Three daytime shifts per week (12 hours total).
  • Two 12-hour weekend shifts per month.
  • Participation in EMS meetings, training and summer service.

Eligibility Requirements Include

  • Current Montclair State University EMS member in cleared status.
  • Full-time student (minimum 12 credits) with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.
  • EMT certification (NJ, National Registry or equivalent).
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification.
  • Completion of ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Good standing with Residence Life.

Applicants must complete an interview process and demonstrate strong commitment to EMS service.

Non-certified members who successfully complete in-house training may be eligible for a New Jersey EMT Training Fund Voucher, which can be used to attend a state-approved EMT training program at no cost during a summer term. Students who receive this support must commit to one full calendar year of volunteer service after obtaining certification.

  • Maintain professionalism and strong communication skills.
  • Complete required EMS training within established timelines.
  • Work effectively in team-based, high-pressure environments.
  • Commit to regular service hours, including weekly and weekend shifts.

Preferred qualifications include prior EMS experience and availability during the summer months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Montclair State University EMS responds to a wide range of medical emergencies, including injuries, allergic reactions, breathing difficulties, seizures and mental health concerns. If advanced care is needed, EMS coordinates with local paramedics and mutual aid partners.

Call 973-655-5222, dial x5222 from a campus phone or call 911. You will be connected to University Police, who will dispatch EMS. Stay on the line and clearly provide your location.

No. EMS does not charge for basic life support services or ambulance transport. However, you may receive a bill if another agency responds through mutual aid, advanced life support (ALS) paramedics are required or you receive treatment at the hospital.
 

No. The University’s Medical Amnesty Program encourages students to call for help in emergencies. Students seeking medical assistance related to alcohol or drug use will not face conduct violations for that incident, provided they follow University guidelines.

EMS carries emergency medications such as Narcan (Naloxone), epinephrine, aspirin, glucose and oxygen. We do not provide non-emergency or over-the-counter medications.
