Training and Awareness

Montclair State University Emergency Medical Services (EMS) offers a range of training programs and awareness initiatives to support the health, safety and well-being of the campus community. From CPR certification to overdose prevention education, these opportunities are designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to respond in critical situations.

CPR and First Aid Training

EMS offers American Heart Association (AHA) certification courses for students, faculty, staff and community members.

Fentanyl Testing Strips

Fentanyl is a highly potent synthetic opioid that can be dangerous even in small amounts. To support harm reduction efforts:

  • Fentanyl testing strips are available on campus
  • Resources can be accessed through the EMS office or the Drop-In Center

Important:

Testing strips do not confirm safety or purity. They are intended to reduce risk, not eliminate it.

Narcan and Overdose Prevention

Opioid misuse continues to impact communities nationwide. EMS is committed to providing education, resources and access to life-saving tools.

Naloxone (Narcan) is a safe, non-habit-forming medication used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It is available over the counter and can be administered by anyone with proper training.

Naloxone kits are installed in AED cabinets throughout campus to provide quick access in the event of an opioid overdose emergency. In addition, naloxone kits are carried by University Police and EMS personnel, ensuring trained responders have immediate access when needed. Free Narcan kits are also available through the EMS office for members of the campus community.

EMS offers in-person training on recognizing overdose symptoms and administering naloxone. Community members are encouraged to participate and learn how to respond in an emergency.

AEDs on Campus

Montclair State University has installed Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) across all main campus buildings. AEDs are used in emergencies when a person is unconscious, not breathing and does not have a pulse. They help restore a normal heart rhythm and are designed for use by anyone.

Use an AED when someone is:

  • Unconscious
  • Not breathing
  • Without a pulse

If you are unsure, it is still appropriate to use the AED alongside CPR.

All AEDs on campus provide step-by-step voice instructions. In an emergency:

  • Call 911 or University Police.
  • Retrieve and open the AED (an alarm will sound).
  • Apply the pads as instructed.
  • Follow the voice prompts.
  • Begin or continue CPR when directed.

AEDs are located throughout campus in high-visibility areas, including academic buildings, residence halls, recreation spaces and administrative offices. Units are also carried by University Police and EMS.
