Financial Aid Checklist

The Financial Aid Process

The following steps must be completed every year for all students who wish to apply for financial aid or for student loans.

  1. Complete the FAFSA

Go to: studentaid.gov and use Montclair State University’s School Code: 002617

    Priority Deadline: March 1, 2026

Sign electronically with your FSA ID (student and parent, if applicable).

    • If an NJ resident, log on to HESAA.
      • Set up an account (student only).
    • Respond to any requests for information from HESAA, if any.  Send directly to HESAA.
  2. Review Your FAFSA Submission Summary (FSS)

The FSS shows what you reported on the FAFSA. An email from Federal Student Aid will tell you when it is ready to be viewed online.

    • Check for any mistakes.
    • If you made a mistake, you may log back onto FAFSA to make a correction.

The FSS will also tell you if you were selected for federal verification. If so, check your Montclair State University email regularly for additional requests for information.

  3. Submit Any Missing Documentation

Log on to StudentForms to review missing forms.

    • Email reminders are sent regularly if we require any additional documentation or forms.
    • Please submit this information ASAP.
  4. Review Your Financial Aid

Aid can be viewed electronically on NEST. Returning students receive their financial aid notifications after spring grades are posted in May.
