Using Financial Aid While Studying Abroad
Financial aid may be available to support your study abroad experience, but eligibility and timing depend on your program type and enrollment.
Students are encouraged to plan early and meet with the appropriate offices to ensure a smooth process.

Before committing to a program:
- Meet with the Office of International Academic Initiatives
- Meet with your academic advisor
- Meet with the Financial Aid Office
Early planning helps ensure your financial aid can be applied correctly.
How Financial Aid Works
Financial aid is disbursed based on Montclair’s academic calendar.
- Aid is typically applied during the first week of classes
- You may need to pay some expenses out of pocket before aid is disbursed
- Refund timing and processes are managed through Red Hawk Central
Financial aid cannot be disbursed early for individual students.
Types of Study Abroad Programs
Exchange Programs
- You are billed by Montclair State University
- Most financial aid can be applied, including:
Affiliated Programs
- You are billed by another institution or program
- New Jersey state grants are not eligible
- Federal grants (Pell, FSEOG) and Federal loans can still be used.
- If you have private loans, waivers or outside scholarships, contact your provider to confirm eligibility.
Summer and Short-Term Programs
- These programs take place during winter or summer sessions
- Financial aid availability is limited
- Eligibility depends on your enrollment and remaining aid
- Additional scholarships may be available to help cover costs.
