Student Accounts Office

Student Accounts provides billing, payment and account support to help you manage your financial responsibilities at Montclair State University. Your Montclair email and NEST account are the University's primary methods of communication. All billing notifications, updates and deadlines are sent to your Montclair email and reflected in NEST. Make it a habit to check both regularly throughout the semester so you never miss anything important.

Billing Overview

Your semester bill is based on your enrolled credits, fees, housing, meal plan and financial aid (if applicable).

Here's what to know:

  • Bills are posted in NEST and are not mailed home
  • Invoices are emailed to your Montclair email on the 1st and 15th of each month
  • Your account may change throughout the semester as you adjust your schedule or as financial aid updates come through

Review your account regularly and make sure all balances are paid by the due date.

Payment Deadlines

You need to pay your bill in full by the published due date each semester. If you add a course after the due date, payment is required within 48 hours.

Refunds and Direct Deposit

If your financial aid or payments exceed your charges, you may receive a refund.

Refunds are typically issued about two weeks after the add/drop period, once financial aid has been finalized.

Set up direct deposit through NEST so your funds reach you faster. If you do not enroll in direct deposit, a paper check will be mailed to the address on file.

Student Health Insurance

All full-time students are required to have health insurance and are automatically enrolled in the University's Student Health Insurance Plan.

If you already have comparable coverage, submit a waiver by the published deadline. If you take no action, the charge will remain on your account.

Coverage, waiver deadlines and enrollment details are managed through University Health Plans.

Understanding Charges and Fees

In addition to tuition, housing and meal plans, you may see other charges on your account based on your enrollment and activity.

These may include:

  • Health insurance premiums
  • Late fees and fines
  • Course or lab fees
  • Application or program fees

Some charges are non-refundable and may vary by term.

For a full breakdown of fees and payment options, visit the Payment and Fees page.

Billing Policies and Responsibilities

You are responsible for all charges on your account, including those that result from schedule changes or financial aid adjustments.

Here's what to keep in mind:

  • You must officially withdraw from courses to avoid charges
  • Your financial aid may be reduced if you drop or stop attending courses
  • Unpaid balances may result in holds, late fees or collection activity
  • You are still responsible for your balance even if you are expecting third-party or employer payment

If you experience an extenuating circumstance, you may be eligible to submit a tuition or fee appeal with supporting documentation.
