Billing, Holds and Appeals

Managing your student account means staying on top of your balance, understanding what happens if it goes unpaid and knowing your options if something unexpected comes up.

Understanding Your Account

You are responsible for all charges posted to your student account, including changes related to registration, housing and financial aid. Your account is available in NEST. Review it regularly throughout the semester so you always know where you stand.

Past Due Balances and Holds

If your bill is not paid by the due date:

  • A late fee may be applied
  • A financial hold may be placed on your account

A hold can prevent you from:

  • Registering for classes
  • Viewing grades
  • Requesting transcripts
  • Receiving your diploma or certifications

Tuition and Fee Appeals

If you experience an extenuating circumstance beyond your control that prevents you from completing a course or semester, you may be eligible to submit a Tuition or Fee Appeal.

Eligibility and Timeline

  • Appeals must be submitted within 6 months of the end of the semester
  • You must withdraw from your course or courses before submitting an appeal

What to Include

All appeals must include supporting documentation. Examples include:

  • Medical documentation or hospital records
  • Statements from advisors for advising-related issues
  • Official documentation supporting your situation

Appeals that are incomplete or do not include sufficient documentation will be denied.

How Appeals Are Reviewed

Appeals are reviewed by multiple University offices, including:

  • Student Accounts
  • Financial Aid
  • Registrar
  • Academic departments or Dean's Office as appropriate

You may be contacted through your Montclair email if additional information is needed.

Decisions

  • Decisions are final
  • You will receive a decision through your Montclair email
  • Approved adjustments will be reflected in NEST

Third-Party Billing and Employer Reimbursement

If a third party such as an employer, sponsor or agency is expected to pay your bill:

  • You are still responsible for making sure your balance is paid on time
  • A Letter of Credit must be submitted by the payment deadline

If payment is delayed or not received:

  • Late fees and holds may apply
  • Financial responsibility will return to you

Employer reimbursement programs do not delay payment deadlines. You must pay your bill by the due date and seek reimbursement separately.

Withdrawing from Courses

If you decide not to attend a course or the University, you must officially withdraw through NEST. Not attending class does not count as a withdrawal.
