The Montclarion is the award-winning student newspaper of Montclair State University — delivering news, sports, entertainment, and culture to the Red Hawk community since 1928. From breaking campus news and student life to features, opinion, fiction, poetry, and original artwork, The Montclarion covers what matters most to students.
Student Journalism That Serves the Community
The Montclarion gives students the opportunity to do the work of a professional news organization every single day. Students report, write, photograph, edit, and publish content on social media, their official website, and print magazines, covering the stories that matter to the Montclair community and beyond.
The newsroom is structured to reflect industry standards, with an Editor-in-Chief, Managing Editor, section editors, staff writers, copy editors, and photographers working together to publish content on a consistent, deadline-driven schedule just as professional news outlets do.
Beyond the newsroom, The Montclarion is an active collaborator within the Montclair student media community, working alongside Hawk+, Hawk Communications, WMSC 90.3 FM, MAC, Montclair News Lab, Red Hawk Sports Network, and other student organizations.

The Montclarion has earned national and statewide recognition for outstanding student journalism across reporting, photography, design, and digital storytelling. In the past year alone, the publication has been honored by three of the most respected organizations in collegiate and professional journalism.
SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards
The Society of Professional Journalists named The Montclarion a Region 1 Finalist in its Mark of Excellence Awards, one of the highest honors in college journalism.
College Media Association Apple Awards
At the College Media Association Apple Awards, Miranda Burnett earned Third Place in Division 1 for Best Opinion Column for her piece "When ICE Watches, Trust Disappears." David Bien-Aime, Emily Ramirez, and Mya Cialini received an Honorable Mention for Best Social Media Coverage of a Single Event, recognized for their Instagram video covering the Yogi Berra Big Catch, a Guinness World Record-setting event for the largest game of catch ever played.
New Jersey Press Association's New Jersey College Newspaper Contest
The New Jersey Press Association's 2025–2026 New Jersey College Newspaper Contest produced five additional placements. Jeimmy Garita took First Place in Online Video for her coverage of The First Mountain Music Festival. The Montclarion staff earned Second Place in General Excellence for the Election Impact Edition and Essentials Edition magazines. David Bien-Aime and Sophia Lazaridis placed Second in Photography for their photo essay capturing Red Hawk Day. David Bien-Aime and Olivia Yayla received Third Place in Biography and Personality Profile. Tom Sheridan earned Third Place in Layout and Design for The Montclarion's 2025 Player of the Year feature on Jacob Morales.
