Special Housing Options
Living on campus at Montclair State University means more than choosing a room, it’s about finding a community that supports your experience, identity and goals.
In addition to traditional housing options, the University offers specialized living environments designed to support academic interests, personal needs and community connection.
Living Learning Communities
Living Learning Communities connect students who share similar academic interests, majors or goals. These communities provide opportunities to live and learn together while building strong connections with peers.
Students in these communities often:
- Take courses together or share academic interests
- Participate in programs and events tied to their community theme
- Engage with faculty and staff outside the classroom
- Build strong peer networks within their cohort
Arts Interdisciplinary Living Community (AILC)
Located in Freeman Hall, this community brings together students in art, music, theatre, dance, broadcasting and communication. It creates a collaborative space where students can share ideas, build connections and engage with campus arts resources.
Honors Living Community (HLC)
Open to students in the Honors Program, this community is located in The Heights and offers a more academically focused environment. Students benefit from seminars, faculty engagement and opportunities for academic and social enrichment.
Inclusive and Affirming Living-Learning Space
Open to any student who values a supportive and inclusive environment, this community focuses on belonging, advocacy and connection. Students participate in programming that supports identity, community-building and leadership development.
Global Village Living Community (GVLC)
Located in The Village, this community brings together domestic and international students interested in cultural exchange. Students engage in shared learning experiences and support one another in navigating global perspectives and campus life.
Need Housing Accommodations?
We recognize some students may need specific accommodations to support their on-campus experience. Students requesting housing accommodations due to a disability must submit documentation to the Disability Resource Center (DRC).
We make every effort to meet approved accommodations, however not every specific roommate or building requests is guaranteed.
Open Housing
Open Housing allows students to choose roommates based on mutual preference rather than restrictive placement policies. This option gives students more flexibility in creating a living environment that aligns with their needs and sense of community.
Open Housing is available in most residential communities, with the exception of Bohn Hall and Stone Hall, and is typically available after completing one academic year at the University.
How It Works
Open Housing is part of the standard housing selection process. Students who are interested will:
- Indicate their interest and complete the Open Housing agreement in RMS prior to selection
- Form a group that matches the size of their intended space
- Select housing together during their assigned selection time
To be eligible for this process, you must have a group that fills the entire suite you are looking to live in. Students who do not participate will select housing in a single-gendered space.
