Who Can Apply for Housing

Both incoming and returning students can apply for housing, but the processes are slightly different. Please review the information below to better understand the necessary steps.

Incoming First-Year and Transfer Students

Housing is guaranteed for incoming first-year and transfer students who complete all required steps by the deadline including your acceptance to the University and submission of enrollment forms, fees and immunization records. Students who complete requirements after the deadline will be considered as space allows.

Incoming Graduate Students

Graduate housing is available on both the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses, including:

  • The Village at Little Falls (Montclair campus)
  • Franklin Street Residence Hall (Bloomfield campus)
  • 19 Austin Place and 23 Austin Place (Bloomfield campus)

Returning Students

Returning residents and commuters can participate in the housing selection process each spring. Students select housing based on earned credits, with priority given to current residents. More details, including timelines and selection instructions, will be shared through your Montclair email.

Incoming Students: How To Apply

Please review steps carefully.

  1. Pay the Housing Application Fee

Submit the $300.00 non-refundable fee by logging into your NEST account and paying through TouchNet. You may also visit Red Hawk Central in person and pay at the cashiers office during regular business hours.

  2. Activate Your NetID

Activate your NetID to access University systems including the Residential Management System (RMS). All housing communication will be sent to your Montclair email account, so please ensure you have logged in and are checking regularly!

  3. Complete Your Housing Agreement

Log into the Residential Management System (RMS) to:

    • Sign your housing agreement
    • Submit lifestyle preferences
    • Select room type preferences

These preferences do not select a housing assignment for you and do not guarantee a specific style of housing.

  4. Receive Your Housing Assignment

Incoming students are assigned housing and will receive a confirmation email once placements are finalized.

We will be communicating specific move-in instructions over the summer break for the fall semester and winter break for the spring semester.

Returning Students: Housing Selection

The steps below are for any currently enrolled residents or commuter students of Montclair State University in good academic standing. Returning students participate in a self-selection process so long as all requirements are met each spring.

Please also ensure the following before selection:

  • Students living on campus are required to enroll in a meal plan
  1. Pay the Housing Application Fee

  2. Complete Your Housing Application

Log into RMS to complete your application and review eligibility requirements.

Please ensure you have read the housing agreement and understand our cancellation policy.

  3. Participate in Room Selection

    • When it's your time, log in and select your space
    • Selection times are based on earned credits and eligibility
    • Students who do not select a space will be placed as space allows
    • You also will have the opportunity to select a roommate or form a roommate group so long as all roommates have completed the above requirements by the deadline.
