Living with Roommates

Living with a roommate is a new experience for many students. It’s an opportunity to learn how to communicate, share space and build relationships with people from different backgrounds.

The key to a successful roommate experience is simple: communication, respect and flexibility.

Roommate Tips & Expectations 

Living with others takes effort, but it’s also one of the most valuable parts of your college experience.

  • Communicate early and often with your roommate(s)
  • Talk early about expectations like sleep, guests and shared items
  • Be open to compromise and different lifestyles
  • Address concerns directly and respectfully
  • Be willing to compromise and share space
  • Set expectations around guests, noise and daily routines
  • Use respectful, direct communication when addressing concerns
  • Avoid discussing issues through text or social media—talk face-to-face
  • Complete a roommate agreement together early in the semester
  • Remember, you don’t have to be best friends to be good roommates!

If challenges arise, start by talking with your roommate. If needed, your Community Assistant (CA) or Resident Assistant (RA) and Community Director can help mediate and support you.

Community Expectations

Living on campus means being part of a shared community. All residents are expected to be respectful, take responsibility for their space and contribute to a positive living environment.

  • Being mindful of noise and shared spaces
  • Respecting others and their belongings
  • Following University policies and residence hall guidelines
  • Communicating openly with roommates and neighbors

Living Learning Communities

Montclair State University integrates academics and residential life through Living Learning Communities. These communities bring together students with shared academic interests, majors or goals, creating opportunities to:

  • Connect with classmates and faculty
  • Participate in programs tied to your academic interests

Services & Support

Support is available to help you quickly resolve issues in your room or residence hall and stay connected on campus.

  • Free laundry services: Washers and dryers are available in each hall. If you experience issues, contact the laundry vendor and notify your Building Residence Life Staff.
  • Something broken?: Submit a work order for plumbing, heating and cooling issues, broken furniture or pest control concerns.
  • Locked out?: For lock or key issues, contact your Building Residence Life Staff..
  • Need help with internet or WiFi? The IT Service Desk can assist with connection issues.
  • Access to TV & movies: Residents also have access to on campus TV and streaming services while connected to campus WiFi.
