Bloomfield College’s roots can be traced back to 1868 when the German Theological Seminary of Newark, New Jersey first opened as a training school for German-speaking ministers in response to the influx of nearly two million German immigrants following the European Revolution of 1848. 

Over the decades, Bloomfield College continued to develop and on September 11, 1872, the first classes were held in Bloomfield following a relocation to the former Bloomfield Academy at Franklin and Liberty Streets. The building served as a dormitory, classrooms, faculty housing and library, being renamed Seibert Hall to honor the institution’s first president, Rev. George Seibert. 

As the local population reflected greater diversity, students came to the college not only to study theology, but to gain a solid liberal arts foundation. Post World War, Bloomfield College received approval for a four-year program and the institution’s name was changed to Bloomfield College and Seminary. Upon receiving its first accreditation by the Middle States Association in 1960, the institution became known as Bloomfield College. 

Bloomfield College’s student body increased during the 1960s and student residence halls were constructed, expanding the campus with the purchase of Westminster Church and Jarvie Hall. Over the decades the College continued to grow, opening a new library in 2000, followed by the Franklin Street Residence Hall in 2014 and Park Place in 2016 as the College’s 14th on-campus residence. During that same year, the new Center for Technology + Creativity also opened offering students the use of cutting-edge computer and electronic technology.

Known as one of our nation’s most diverse liberal arts colleges and as New Jersey’s only four-year Predominantly Black Institution (PBI), Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Minority Serving Institution (MSI), Bloomfield College became a part of Montclair State University in July, 2023, creating Bloomfield College of Montclair State University.

The Division of Human Resources supports the University’s commitment to academic excellence, educational innovation, leading-edge research, and service to the people of New Jersey. Human Resources provides current employees with a variety of resources.

All members of the Montclair State University community are required to obtain and carry their University-issued ID card while on campus. In addition to identifying you as a member of the University community, your ID card provides access to meal plans, Flex and Red Hawk Dollars, residence halls, the Student Recreation Center, and many other campus services and facilities.

The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) encourages, facilitates and supports faculty and staff in their pursuit of external funding for their research, education, training and other scholarly activities.
