In support of Bloomfield College of Montclair State University’s mission, the Center for Student Success (CSS) serves as the central hub for academic support, student development, and student success initiatives. Through collaborative academic support services such as Bloomfield Boost, the  McNair Scholars Program, the Center for Academic Advising and Career Education, and the Office of Tutoring, Writing, and Academic Support, CSS provides an accessible network of resources that fosters student engagement through diverse success programming.

At CSS, we recognize that Bloomfield students bring unique strengths, experiences, and perspectives to our academic community. Our approach to student success is rooted in holistic development, combining evidence-based practices with innovative, community-informed strategies that reflect the needs of our students.

The Center for Student Success:

  • Connects students, faculty, and staff with resources, strategies, and tools that support academic success and personal growth.
  • Serves as a campus hub for student success research, best practices, and innovation in higher education.

  • Supports students on Academic Action with guidance, skill-building, and individualized support to improve academic performance and study habits.

Academic Success Coaching

Academic Success Coaching at CSS is a proactive, developmental partnership that empowers students to identify goals, strengthen academic skills, overcome barriers, and persist toward degree completion.

Academic Success Coaches are trained in evidence-based coaching practices and use a variety of tools and resources to support student success.

Through intentional conversations and connections to campus resources, coaching supports students’ academic success and holistic development by building skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging that promotes persistence toward graduation.

Academic Action

IDS 165: Academic Recovery supports students on Academic Action in developing academic, personal and social skills needed to succeed and graduate from Bloomfield College of Montclair State University.

Academic Recovery is designed to help students identify their strengths and areas for growth while developing personalized action plans for self-improvement. With the assistance of their Peer Academic Coach, students will be connected with campus and community resources that can support them in achieving their goals and implementing their plans effectively. The course also focuses on building essential strategies and life skills that foster both academic achievement and personal success, empowering students to thrive throughout their college experience and beyond.

  • Attend class regularly
  • Meet with an Academic Coach and academic advisor as outlined in the academic action contract
  • Engage with campus and community resources that support individual self-improvement goals
  • Complete assigned coursework and activities through Canvas
  • Attend required meetings with the instructor outside of class to review feedback, discuss progress, and address academic concerns
  • Participate in mandatory tutoring sessions as outlined in the academic action contract and course syllabus
  • Successfully complete all course requirements and meet institutional retention standards

Students who do not successfully complete IDS 165 Academic Recovery and/or fail to meet retention standards may be placed on the appropriate academic standing based on their academic history, which may include academic suspension.
