Get Help and Support
Start Here! Whether you're looking for support for yourself, concerned about a friend or searching for health and wellness resources, we're here to help. Explore the options below to find the information, services and support that best fit your needs.
Getting Help for Yourself
If you are looking for support, there are options available to meet you where you are.
Counseling and Support
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers confidential support for a wide range of concerns, including stress, mental health and substance use. Services include short-term counseling, group support and referrals for additional care.
Let’s Talk
Let’s Talk provides informal, confidential consultations with CAPS counselors. These drop-in sessions are available across campus with no appointment or fee required.
Referrals
If you need more specialized or long-term support, CAPS can connect you to off-campus providers, including therapy, intensive treatment and rehabilitation services.
Help a Friend
Supporting a friend can feel overwhelming, but starting the conversation is an important first step. Changing behavior, whether it is starting a healthy habit or addressing substance use, is not about willpower alone.
Even when someone recognizes a problem, change takes time.
Tips to Start a Conversation
- Wait until the person is sober and able to engage
- Express concern clearly and honestly
- Focus on how their behavior is impacting you
- Avoid lectures, blame or confrontation
- Separate the person from the behavior
- Encourage accountability
- Do not cover for their actions
- Expect defensiveness, it often comes from fear
- Set clear boundaries
- Share available campus resources
- Suggest activities that do not involve substances
- Stay supportive and acknowledge progress
- Understand that setbacks can be part of change
Alcohol and Other Drug Support
If you have questions about alcohol or other drug use, or want to better understand your own habits, the Alcohol and Other Drug Program provides education, tools and support to help you make informed decisions.
In an emergency, always prioritize safety and call for help.
Medical Amnesty
If you or someone else needs medical assistance due to alcohol or drug use, your first priority should always be safety.
Montclair State University’s Medical Amnesty Policy encourages students to call for help in emergency situations by reducing the risk of disciplinary action when seeking assistance for themselves or others.
Tobacco and Nicotine Support
The use of all tobacco products is prohibited on both the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses.
Students who are interested in reducing or quitting nicotine use can access free support resources, including text-based programs, counseling services and local quit centers.
Additional Health Resources
Students can access a variety of resources to support overall well-being.
Mental Health
Support is available through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), including counseling and wellness resources.
Sexual Health
Confidential services, including testing and prevention, are available through the Student Health Center.
Body Image and Eating Disorders
Resources are available to support body image awareness, education and recovery.
Stress and Sleep
Students can explore tools and strategies to manage stress and improve sleep.
