Alcohol and Other Drug Program
Montclair State University’s Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Project is a comprehensive, evidence-informed initiative focused on reducing high-risk drinking and substance use.
This work is a collaborative effort between Health Promotion, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Student Conduct and campus and community partners. Together, these groups provide education, support and prevention strategies to help students make informed decisions and support overall well-being.
In an emergency, contact University Police at 973-655-5222.
Education and Prevention
Health Promotion leads a variety of educational initiatives designed to increase awareness, reduce risk and promote healthier decision-making.
Self-Assessment Tools
Students can explore their habits through:
- Alcohol eCHECKUP TO GO, a brief self-assessment that provides personalized feedback on alcohol use.
- Cannabis eCHECKUP TO GO, which offers similar insights related to marijuana use.
These tools are designed to help students better understand their behaviors and make informed choices.
Emergency Awareness
Signs of Alcohol Poisoning
Alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency. Watch for:
- Pale, flushed or clammy skin
- Slow or irregular breathing
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Unconsciousness or inability to wake the person
What To Do
- Call 911 or University Police immediately
- Turn the person on their side to prevent choking
- Stay with them until help arrives
- Do not leave them alone
- Do not give cold showers
If someone needs help, act immediately. Getting medical attention can save a life.
Understanding Alcohol Use
What is Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)?
Blood Alcohol Concentration, or BAC, measures the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream. Understanding BAC can help you recognize how alcohol affects your body and decision-making.
Factors That Impact BAC
- Body Weight: Determines how alcohol is diluted in the body.
- Sex Assigned at Birth: Differences in body composition and enzymes affect how alcohol is processed.
- Hormones: Hormonal fluctuations can impact intoxication levels.
- Time: The speed at which alcohol is consumed.
- Amount Consumed: The number and strength of drinks.
What Counts as One Drink
- 12 oz beer (about 4–5% alcohol)
- 4 oz wine (about 12% alcohol)
- 1.25 oz liquor (80 proof)
- 1 oz liquor (100 proof)
Mixed drinks may contain more than one serving and should be approached with caution.
Support and Intervention
Counseling and the ECHO Program
The Exploring Change and Healthy Options (ECHO) program is a core service offered through CAPS. It provides a supportive, non-judgmental space for students to explore their alcohol or other drug use.
Students typically meet with CAPS staff for a short series of sessions that include:
- An initial assessment of alcohol and other drug use
- Personalized feedback and reflection
- Guidance to support informed decision-making
Students may participate voluntarily or be referred through the student conduct process.
Harm Reduction and Safety Initiatives
Montclair offers a range of initiatives designed to reduce risk and increase access to life-saving resources.
- Naloxone (Narcan) kits are available across campus, including in AED cabinets, CAPS, Health Promotion and the Student Health Center.
- The Safe, a health vending machine, provides access to items like naloxone and fentanyl test strips.
- Medication Drop Box located at University Police Headquarters allows for safe disposal of medications at any time.
These efforts aim to increase accessibility, reduce harm and support student safety.
Advisory Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ACAD)
The Advisory Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs is a coalition of campus and community members who collaborate on substance use education, prevention and policy.
The committee is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating strategies that reduce risk and promote informed decision-making across the University community.
Through research, education and policy recommendations, ACAD supports student success, personal development and a healthy campus environment.
