Montclair recognizes and participates in important observances throughout the year, including:

- Transgender Awareness Week (November)
- International Transgender Day of Remembrance
The University also partners with organizations across New Jersey to participate in statewide remembrance and advocacy efforts.

Intramural Sports
Intramural Sports offer a variety of activities with flexible commitment levels.
Participation in Men’s and Women’s leagues is based on gender identity, and Open leagues are available to all students.
Club Sports
Club Sports are student-led teams providing opportunities for both recreational and competitive play while building community.

Montclair provides processes to update your name and gender information within University systems.
Updating Legal Gender Marker
- Complete the Change of Name, Gender and/or Social Security Number form through the Registrar
- Submit the form with required legal documentation
Acceptable Documentation
- Marriage certificate
- Divorce decree
- Court order for name change
- Naturalization document
- Birth certificate
- Passport

Legal Resources in New Jersey
New Jersey law allows individuals to update identity documents to reflect their gender identity.
- Removes the requirement for proof of surgery
- Allows for a non-binary “X” designation

Health and Well-Being
Access medical, counseling and support resources both on and off campus.
Health Insurance and Medical Care
Hormone therapy and gender-confirming procedures may be covered under the Student Health Insurance Plan.
The Student Health Center can assist with ongoing care and coordination with external providers and ensures all bodies are welcome and will receive the same care.
Counseling and Support
Students may access counseling services on campus through CAPS or through external providers. Some providers may require counseling as part of the transition process.
External Providers and Resources
Students may explore additional LGBTQ-focused healthcare providers, support organizations and clinics in the region.
Creating an Inclusive Classroom
Faculty, staff and teaching assistants all play a role in creating welcoming and inclusive environments for transgender and gender nonconforming students.
Simple practices, such as using a student’s chosen name and pronouns, setting clear expectations for respect and being mindful of classroom dynamics, can significantly impact a student’s experience and sense of belonging.
- Respect Names and Pronouns: Use the name and pronouns students share with you, even if they differ from what appears on a class roster. Avoid making assumptions based on appearance or records.
- Set the Tone Early: Establish expectations for respect at the beginning of the semester. Encourage students to share names and pronouns in ways that feel comfortable and model inclusive language.
- Avoid Unintentional Outing: Be mindful when taking attendance or displaying rosters. Always use a student’s current name and avoid sharing information that could reveal their identity without consent.
- Address Mistakes Respectfully: If a mistake is made, briefly correct it and move forward. Normalizing corrections helps create a respectful and supportive environment.
- Be Mindful of Boundaries: Avoid asking personal questions about a student’s identity, body or experiences unless they choose to share.
- Model Inclusive Behavior: Use inclusive language, correct mistakes when needed and foster respectful dialogue to create a space where all students can engage fully.
