The Safe Space Program is an interactive training designed to equip students, faculty and staff with the knowledge and tools to support LGBTQ+ individuals and create more inclusive environments at Montclair and beyond.

Through reflection, discussion and real-world application, participants develop the skills needed to challenge bias, support others and contribute to a stronger campus community.

Participants explore their own experiences while gaining tools to support others and create change.

Why Safe Space Matters

LGBTQ+ identities are not always visible, which can make it difficult for students to identify supportive individuals and spaces.

The Safe Space Program helps create a visible network of allies across campus, making it easier for students to find support, ask questions and feel a sense of belonging.

Training Overview

Safe Space Training is a three-hour, interactive session that includes activities, discussion and personal reflection.

  • Sessions are first-come, first-served and require pre-registration
  • Participants are expected to attend the full session
  • Open only to members of the Montclair community
  • You may bring your own food or drinks

Only participants who complete the full training and agree to program expectations may display the Safe Space decal.

What You Will Learn

Participants in the Safe Space Program will:

  • Understand and reflect on personal perspectives and experiences
  • Differentiate between sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation
  • Use inclusive and affirming language
  • Identify ways to create more inclusive environments
  • Recognize and challenge stereotypes
  • Connect students to campus and community resources

Visiting a Safe Space

Safe Spaces are designed to provide support, not replace professional services.

  • A place where you will be pressured to take action or change your identity.
  • A judgmental environment

Request a Training

Interested in bringing Safe Space Training to your group or department?

  • A minimum of 20 participants is required for a custom session
  • Requests must be submitted at least 4 weeks in advance
  • Requestors are responsible for securing a space with presentation capabilities
  • Trainings are scheduled based on facilitator availability

If you are unable to meet the minimum, you are encouraged to register for an existing session.

History of the Program

The Safe Space Program was established at Montclair in 1997 to support LGBTQ+ individuals and raise awareness about inclusion and equity on campus.

Since its launch, the program has expanded its reach and continues to play an important role in building a more supportive and informed campus community.

Safe Space Symbols

The Safe Space decal represents a commitment to inclusion and support.

  • Earlier symbols incorporated triangles historically used to label LGBTQ individuals, later reclaimed as symbols of identity and pride.
  • The current symbol features the rainbow flag, representing diversity, community and inclusion.

Displaying the decal signals that the individual has completed the training and is committed to supporting LGBTQ+ community members.

Advocacy and Outreach creates spaces where you can explore your identity, connect with others and engage in meaningful experiences that shape your time at Montclair. Through programs, events and partnerships, the office supports queer, cultural, interfaith and gender-based communities while fostering a campus environment rooted in inclusion, connection and belonging. All programs and services are open to all students.
