Looking for an internship, your first job or just want to see what’s out there? Meet 80+ employers actively hiring for full-time roles and internships on Wednesday, October 7, 1-4 p.m., Montclair campus, University Hall, 7th Floor Conference Center. Open to all students, majors and class years, this is a chance to explore different industries, meet recruiters, practice your networking skills and discover what employers are looking for. Get Ready, Stay Ready!

A little preparation can make a big difference. Before Wednesday, October 7, take some time to complete these quick steps.

1. Resume Refresh 

Employers may ask for your resume, so make sure yours is ready to share!

  • Add your latest experiences, skills, projects and accomplishments.
  • Check that your contact information is up to date.
  • Give the formatting a quick review so it’s easy to read.
  • Make sure your resume reflects where you are now, not where you were a year ago.

Starting from scratch? No problem! Career Services can help you build your resume, while Big Interview offers tools to create professional materials and practice your interview skills.

 

 Career Tip: Don’t wait until you’re applying for a job to update your resume. Keeping it current throughout the year means you’ll be ready when the right opportunity comes along.

 

2. Pitch Perfect 

Walking up to an employer can feel awkward, but you don’t need a perfect pitch, just a simple way to introduce yourself and start the conversation.

  • Introduce yourself: Your name + major/year
  • Share your interests: What type of work or industry interests you?
  • Ask a question: What made you stop by their table?

Example: “I’m a sophomore majoring in marketing, and I’m really interested in social media and brand strategy. I saw that your company has marketing internships, so I wanted to learn more about what you’re looking for.”

The goal isn’t to memorize a script, it’s to start a conversation and make a connection.

3. Know Who You Want to Meet 

Before the fair, review the employer list and identify a few employers you would especially like to meet. For each one, take a few minutes to find out:

  • What does the organization do?
  • What positions or internships are available?
  • What skills or majors are they looking for?
  • Why are you interested in connecting with them?

Try the 3-3-3 approach:

  • 3 employers you want to meet.
  • 3 questions you want to ask.
  • 3 conversations you want to have.

You can always talk with more employers once you are there. Remember, a career fair is a conversation. You learn about the employer while the employer learns about you.

Professional attire can help you feel prepared and confident, but you do not need to spend money on a new outfit for the career fair.
