Our Divisions

The Montclair State University Police Department is organized into specialized divisions that work together to provide comprehensive law enforcement, emergency response and public safety services to the University community.

Commander: Captain Kristin DeWitt

The Patrol Division is the largest division within the department and serves as the primary law enforcement presence on campus. Uniformed officers patrol the University 24 hours a day, seven days a week, responding to emergencies, enforcing state laws and University regulations, investigating incidents and working proactively to help maintain a safe and welcoming campus.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Patrol the University campus 24/7

  • Apprehend criminal offenders
  • Respond to police, fire and EMS emergencies
  • Investigate criminal and non-criminal incidents
  • Enforce state statutes and motor vehicle laws
  • Investigate traffic collisions
  • Promote crime prevention and campus safety awareness

Commander: Detective Captain Michelle Ciecwisz

The Detective Bureau is responsible for investigating criminal incidents reported to the University Police Department. Detectives conduct follow-up investigations, identify and apprehend offenders, manage property and evidence, monitor the confidential tips line and provide crisis intervention and victim support throughout the investigative process.

The bureau also connects victims with legal, medical and University resources while educating the campus community on crime prevention and personal safety.

Detectives receive specialized training in:

  • Domestic violence investigations
  • Sexual assault response
  • Fingerprint identification and processing
  • Bias crime investigations
  • Gang awareness
  • Evidence management
  • Alcohol and drug identification

A detective is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Fire Safety

The Office of Fire Safety ensures campus buildings meet fire and life safety codes through inspections, plan reviews, evacuation drills, equipment testing, and ongoing fire prevention training and education.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

Montclair State University Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a volunteer, student-run organization that has served the campus community since 1998. Staffed by certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), EMS provides basic life support, prehospital emergency medical care and ambulance transportation to local hospitals. EMS operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring that students, faculty, staff and visitors have access to immediate emergency care at all times. In addition to emergency response, EMS supports the broader community through CPR and First Aid training and provides medical standby services for events across campus and the surrounding area.
