Records, Property & Court Information

The Montclair State University Police Department maintains police reports, crash reports and other official records in accordance with the New Jersey Open Public Records Act (OPRA). Whether you need to request a report, recover lost property or access court information, the resources below can help.

Police reports and other records are available through the Records Bureau during normal business hours.

Request Records

The Records Bureau processes requests for police reports, crash reports, background checks and other public records. Please allow 5–7 business days for most reports to become available unless otherwise noted.

Request a Police Report

Police incident reports may be requested by submitting the completed request form online or in person.

To request a report:

  • Complete and sign the request form.
  • Include a valid photo ID.
  • Email the completed form to records@montclair.edu, or submit it in person.
  • Reports may be emailed or picked up from the Records Bureau.

Please Note: Reports are typically available 5–7 days after the incident.

Open Public Records Requests

Requests for public records governed by the New Jersey Open Public Records Act (OPRA) are managed by the University's Custodian of Records within University Counsel.

If requesting records by email, complete both the OPRA Request Form and the Email Public Records Request Form.

Lost & Found

Claiming Property

Recovered property may be picked up with valid identification at the Police Substation, Abbott and Costello Center, The Village at Little Falls.

Found Property

If you find unattended property call 973-655-5222, bring the item to Police Headquarters or to the Student Center Information Desk. Please Note: University Police cannot accept clothing or food items.

Municipal Court Information

Montclair State University spans multiple municipalities across Essex and Passaic counties, so traffic and criminal matters may be heard in different municipal courts depending on where an incident occurred.

  • For motor vehicle summonses, the municipality is listed at the top of your ticket.
  • For criminal matters, cases are heard in the court with jurisdiction over where the offense occurred.

From the Montclair State campus make a left onto Normal Avenue. At the first traffic light make a right onto Valley Road. Continue on Valley Road until you reach the Bloomfield Avenue intersection. The Municipal Building will be on your left.

From the Montclair State campus make a make a right onto Normal Avenue. At the first traffic light make a right onto Upper Mountain Avenue. At approximately ½ of a mile, the road will split, yield left onto Long Hill Road. Continue on Long Hill Road until you come to a stop sign, this is Ridge Road. Make a right onto Ridge Road. At the next traffic light, you will make a left onto Main Street. Continue on Main Street until you reach the next traffic light (Stevens Avenue). Make a left onto Stevens Avenue. The Municipal Court will be on the right-hand side.

From the Montclair State campus make a left onto Normal Avenue.  At the first traffic light, make a left onto Valley Road. Continue northbound on Valley Road until you reach the first traffic light (Van Houten Avenue). Make a right onto Van Houten Avenue. Continue on Van Houten Avenue until you reach the Clifton Avenue intersection. The Municipal complex will be on the left-hand side.

 

Student Conduct

The University's student conduct process is separate from the criminal justice system.

Students are expected to follow the University Code of Conduct in addition to all local, state and federal laws. Conduct proceedings are administered by the Dean of Students Office and may occur regardless of whether criminal charges are filed.
