Registered Student Organizations
Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) are at the heart of student life at Montclair State University. Whether centered around academics, culture, identity or shared interests, RSOs give you the opportunity to build community, lead initiatives and shape your campus experience.
Organizations fall into categories such as academic, cultural, social and special interest and are student-led spaces designed for connection, expression and leadership.
What is a Registered Student Organization?
An RSO is a group of students organized around a shared purpose, interest or identity. RSOs are officially recognized through the Student Government Association (SGA), which provides oversight, support and access to funding and resources.
RSOs operate with student leadership, follow SGA statutes and play a key role in creating programs, events and opportunities across campus.
Why Join or Start an RSO?
Getting involved in an RSO allows you to:
- Build leadership and organizational skills
- Connect with students who share your interests
- Plan events and programs for the campus community
- Advocate for ideas and create change
RSOs are one of the most impactful ways to get involved and make your mark at Montclair.
Starting a New Organization
Students interested in creating a new RSO must complete the registration process through Engage. To be considered, organizations must have:
- At least seven undergraduate student members
- A full-time University advisor
- An executive board (including a president and treasurer)
- A constitution and roster
Once submitted, applications are reviewed by SGA and the Center for Student Involvement. Approved organizations gain access to resources, funding and campus opportunities.

RSO Benefits and Resources
Registered Student Organizations receive access to:
- Funding through the Student Government Association
- Space reservations for meetings and events
- An official Engage page
- Participation in involvement fairs and campus programming
Funding and Financial Access
Each RSO is eligible for financial support through SGA, including:
- Annual funding allocation to support operations and events
- Supplemental funding for additional programming (up to $7,000 per semester)
- Publicity funding for promotional items and materials
To access funding, organization presidents and treasurers must complete required financial training and follow SGA financial policies and procedures.
Managing Events and Finances
RSOs are responsible for planning events and managing budgets in accordance with SGA policies. This includes:
- Submitting event funding requests in advance
- Completing required financial paperwork
- Following purchasing and reimbursement procedures
- Coordinating contracts, vendors and event logistics
Proper planning and adherence to guidelines ensures smooth approval processes and successful events.
