Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) provides secure access to a university-managed desktop environment and approved software from virtually any device. This service allows users to work remotely or on campus without needing to install applications locally.

What Is VDI?

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) provides access to a university-managed desktop environment that runs remotely. Through VDI, users can access a Windows virtual desktop and approved software from any device with an internet connection.

VDI is delivered through Omnissa Horizon.

How to Sign Out of Your Virtual Desktop

To log off from your session, go to the top-right corner of the virtual desktop and select the circle icon with your initials. From the menu that appears, click Sign Out to safely end your session.

How to Access VDI

  1. Go to the VDI Web Portal

  2. Log in with your NetID and complete multi-factor authentication

    Complete sign-in using your NetID (e.g., lastnamef1) and password, then approve your Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA) request to access the virtual desktop.

  3. Select your virtual desktop (e.g., Student Desktop)

    This will launch your assigned university desktop environment with the appropriate software and resources for your role or course.

  4. Wait for the virtual desktop to fully load

    Loading time may vary based on your internet connection and may take a short moment to complete.

Tips for Using Your Virtual Desktop

How to Add a Favorite

You can save frequently used virtual desktops or applications for quick access:

  1. Log in to the Omnissa Horizon dashboard.
  2. Locate the virtual desktop or application you use regularly.
  3. Click the star icon (or “Add to Favorites” option) next to the item.
  4. The item will now appear in your Favorites section for easy access.

Tip: Favorites help you quickly launch commonly used resources without searching each time.

How to Log Off

When you are finished using your virtual desktop:

  1. Inside the virtual desktop session, click the Start menu or user icon.
  2. Select Sign Out or Log Off.
  3. Close your browser tab or Horizon client after the session ends.
  4. If applicable, return to the Omnissa dashboard and click Log Out.

Important: Always log off properly to ensure your session ends securely and resources are released.
