Academic Advising is more than choosing your classes each semester, it’s an ongoing support process that helps you make informed decisions during your time at Montclair. Whether you’re exploring majors, planning your path to graduation, preparing for next steps, or navigating an unexpected challenge, your Academic Advisor is here to help you stay on track and connect you with the resources you need to succeed.

Academic Advising for Students in Majors

If you have declared a major, you may be assigned to a faculty or departmental advisor where your major is housed, or you may be assigned to a professional staff advisor in your College or School’s Student Success Center.

Other Academic Advising Support

There are several other academic advising support services available to students pursuing other pathways at Montclair, including those who are still exploring their academic options or those who have been admitted into specialized programs.

The Discovery Program supports your academic exploration at Montclair and can help you make a confident, informed decision when choosing a major. Their office is located in Cole Hall, Suite 300. Contact: discoveryprogram@montclair.edu, 973-655-7114.

Student athletes receive all academic advising support from Tara Rienecker and Dwight Ceballo. 

All Veteran and Military-affiliated students receive academic advising support from Jonathan Gubitosi, located in the Veteran and Military Services Office.

Adult students receive all academic advising support from the Center for Academic Success and Tutoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

To find out who your advisor is, log onto NEST and view your degree audit on Degree Works. They may also be listed in Navigate. If no advisor is listed, please contact your department, College or School directly.

Your advisor can help you:

  • Plan your schedule and select courses
  • Understand degree requirements and monitor your progress
  • Explore majors, minors, concentrations and programs
  • Develop a plan to stay on track for graduation
  • Discuss academic goals, career interests, or preparation for graduate school
  • Navigate academic policies, procedures, and important deadlines
  • Connect with tutoring, career services, success coaching, and other resources

Appointments can be scheduled through Navigate. If your advisor isn’t listed or no appointments are available, please contact your academic department, College or School.

Some students–including most first-year, transfer, readmitted, and exploratory students–must meet with an academic advisor each semester to receive a Registration PIN required for registration and to ensure they are staying on track.

Academic alerts and progress reports are shared through Navigate to help you stay on track. If you receive one, review the feedback, follow any recommended next steps, and connect with your instructor or academic advisor if you have questions. These notifications are designed to connect you with support early, so you can address challenges before they become bigger obstacles.
