If you're planning to pursue medical school or another health professions program after graduation, Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Advising can help you navigate the process from choosing prerequisite courses to preparing your professional school application. Whether your goal is medicine, dentistry, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, nursing, optometry, or another healthcare profession, advisors will work with you throughout your undergraduate experience to develop an academic plan that supports your goals.

What is Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Advising?

Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Advising is a supplemental advising resource available to students interested in pursuing a career in medicine or the health professions. In addition to meeting with your academic advisor, you'll work with a Pre-Medical or Pre-Health Advisor to better understand professional school requirements, identify meaningful experiences outside the classroom, and develop a long-term plan for becoming a competitive applicant. 

Topics commonly discussed during advising appointments include prerequisite coursework, admissions exams, application timelines, clinical and volunteer experiences, research opportunities, shadowing, personal statements, interviews, and letters of recommendation.

Choosing a Major

Medical and other health professions programs admit students from a wide range of academic disciplines. While you'll need to complete prerequisite science coursework, your undergraduate major should reflect your interests, strengths, and career goals.

Programs and Opportunities

In addition to one-on-one advising, Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Advising offers several programs and resources to help you connect with peers, prepare for professional school, and explore your next steps.

Qualified students interested in dentistry may be eligible to apply for Montclair's accelerated BS/DMD pathway with the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. This partnership provides an opportunity for students to complete their bachelor's degree before continuing into dental school through a defined pathway.

Many medical, dental, and other professional schools encourage—or require—applicants to submit a Committee Letter as part of the admissions process. Our Pre-Health Advisory Committee prepares comprehensive Committee Letters for eligible students who complete the required application process.

How to Request a Committee Letter

Every fall semester, students have the opportunity to meet with representatives from graduate and professional schools to learn about admissions requirements, academic programs, and application expectations. The fair is an excellent opportunity to ask questions, compare programs, and begin planning your next steps.

Connect with experienced Pre-Medical or Pre-Health students who understand the challenges of balancing coursework, extracurricular involvement, volunteerism, and planning for professional school. Peer Mentors can share their experiences, answer questions, and help newer students navigate campus resources and opportunities. Student who have progressed in the program may also have the opportunity to apply to serve as a Pre-Medical Peer Mentor. 

Getting involved beyond the classroom is an important part of preparing for a career in medicine or healthcare. Explore different student organizations, volunteer opportunities, undergraduate research opportunities, leadership experiences, and service initiatives to connect with peers, develop professional skills, and gain meaningful experiences. 

Throughout the year, our office offers workshops and information sessions covering topics such as admissions exams, application timelines, personal statements, interviewing, and preparing competitive professional school applications.
