Montclair State University’s teacher education program boasts a rich history of national accreditation. As one of the pioneering institutions accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in 1954, we have maintained our accreditation continuously as NCATE transformed into the esteemed Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
Our commitment to excellence extends beyond accreditation, as we provide students with comprehensive tools and resources to navigate program requirements, manage assessments, and track evaluations, ensuring a seamless and successful educational journey.

What is CAEP?
The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) is a national accrediting body for teacher preparation programs. CAEP’s mission is to advance excellence in educator preparation through evidence-based accreditation that assures quality and supports continuous improvement in the effectiveness of preparation to strengthen P-12 student learning. CAEP was formed in 2010 when two of the previous national accreditation bodies, NCATE and TEAC, consolidated and was formally recognized by CHEA (Council for Higher Education Accreditation) in 2014.

Request for Public Comments
The College for Education and Engaged Learning at Montclair State University is hosting an accreditation visit on March 22, 2027. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the accreditation team. Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered by the College. Respondents will be asked to identify their relationship to the provider (e.g., current or former student or faculty member, employer of graduates).

Comments must be submitted within the specified period for public comment and reflect the core tenets of CAEP accreditation standards of excellence, which recognize that:
- In CAEP’s performance-based system, accreditation is based on evidence that teacher candidates know the subject matter and can teach it effectively so students learn.
- In the CAEP system, EPPs must prove that candidates can connect theory to practice and be effective in an actual P-12 classroom.
- A CAEP-accredited professional education provider is expected to engage in ongoing planning and evaluation; conduct continuous assessment and development; ensure faculty and programs reflect new knowledge, practice, and technologies; and continuously develop in response to the evolving world of education and educational reform.
- Comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the respondent’s relationship, if any, to the institution (i.e., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates).
- Copies of all correspondence received will be sent to the university for comment prior to the review.
