Important Parking & Safety Reminders
Parking Services and University Police would like to provide several important reminders and updates to help you plan ahead, park appropriately, avoid unnecessary citations and be safe while driving on campus!
Avoid Campus Traffic & Congestion
- β° Arrive Early!: Peak times occur when classes end and begin and during free periods as many exit the campus. Our police officers and crossing guards are working during those periods to keep traffic moving as is reasonably possible.
- β Recommended Parking Areas: We highly encourage you to consider parking in Lots 60, 61, 62 and the NJ Transit Deck to avoid campus traffic congestion during peak travel and class times.
- π¬ CarParc Diem May Reach Capacity: If CarParc Diem fills up (and it will generally between 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. daily) head to the NJ Transit Deck or further lots and get your steps in or shuttle! (or just start there).
- π Getting Dropped Off or Picked Up?: Pull into an adjacent parking lot or designated drop off/pick up area along College Avenue that has curbing designed to pull in off the roadway. Vehicles should not wait on an active roadway, fire lanes, in spots reserved for accessible parking or other reserved spaces as you are creating traffic and endangering your safety.
- π Use the Campus Shuttles: The University provides several free shuttle services across campus and to select off-campus locations! There are different shuttles for different purposes: All Campus Shuttle, Bloomfield Campus Shuttle, Shopper Shuttles, Night Hawk on-demand service, PWD Shuttles (view Montclair campus accessibility map) and more for your convenience. Download the TripShot app to check for live shuttle locations, estimated arrival times and service alerts.
- π Use Public Transportation: We have two NJ Transit rail stations (Montclair State University and Montclair Heights) and NJ Transit bus routes (11/28, 191 and 705) providing connections to surrounding communities and New York City. You can also get 25% off your monthly NJ Transit pass!
- β Residents with Parking Permits: It's not recommended to drive to main campus for class! Walk or take the shuttles, don't add to the congestion!
Good News: 1000 New Parking Spots in NJ Transit Deck!
We are pleased to announce that there are over 1000 new parking spots available in the NJ Transit Deck, providing additional parking options for you! You can easily access campus by using the NJ Transit pedestrian bridge to cross over the tracks, allowing you to bypass driving on Clove Road entirely! Alternatively, you can use the NJ Transit bus stop on Clove Road, where University shuttle service is available for pickup. Additional shuttle service will also be added at the Clove Road stop to provide more frequent and convenient access to campus.
Avoid main campus congestion near CarParc Diem and check out NJ Transit, instead!
The deck is available to the following University permit holders and will be treated as surface lot:
- NJ Transit Resident Permit holders
- Commuter Student Permit holders
- Faculty/Staff with a valid University parking permit
- Short-term/transient and monthly parking options for NJ Transit commuter customers.
Do Not Park in Faculty/Staff-only Lots!
This includes the lot by the Student Center (Lot 17) and the lot by the Student Recreation Center (Lot 19) which is now a 24-hour Faculty/Staff parking lot.
- Lot 19M is available for short-term parking at $2.00 per hour, with a 4-hour maximum.
Obey the signs. Avoid the fines.
Drive the Speed Limit & Cross at Crosswalks!
Speed is strictly enforced on both the Montclair and Bloomfield campuses. Slow down, get off your phone, keep your eyes on the road and stop for pedestrians.
- 25 mph on University and adjacent roads
- 15 mph on College Avenue
- 5 mph in all parking decks and surface lots
Pedestrians need to be just as aware as drivers β cross at crosswalks, do not use a cell phone while crossing and know that crossing in other areas increases risks.
Safety Is the #1 Goal!: It is our goal that every person feels and remains safe here at Montclair State University and that every person is treated with the dignity and respect they so very much deserve from all facets of the University including Police - that starts with recognizing we all play a part in our safety.
