Curricular review at Montclair State University is a collaborative, faculty-driven process designed to ensure the quality, coherence, and integrity of all academic programs. The Curriculum, Assessment, and Accreditation team within the Office of the Provost partners with faculty, department chairs, associate deans, and university governance committees to support the development, modification, and maintenance of programs and courses across the University.

Whether you are proposing a new program, revising an existing curriculum, or making course-level changes, the team provides the resources, timelines, and guidance you need to navigate the process.

Curriculum Alterations, New Programs, and Discontinued Programs

To meet evolving industry and research needs, curriculum must continually adapt, whether by revising existing programs, proposing new ones, or discontinuing programs that no longer support the Institutional Mission.

Program Management encompasses the ongoing maintenance and oversight of our programs, including new proposals, program alterations, and program inactivations. The term, “programs,” could refer to undergraduate and graduate degree programs, concentrations in an existing program, certificates, minors, combined undergraduate/graduate programs, and dual degree programs.

Modifications to programs that are already approved and listed in the University Catalog will follow the curriculum alterations process.

New degree program proposals will be reviewed by the NJ Presidents’ Council Academic Issues Committee and must align with NJPC AIC’s requirements for curriculum proposals. They must be beneficial for the students as well as the University to expand MSU's reach to new student communities (i.e., the focus should be on the net increase of enrollment, without pulling from other existing programs).

Prior to advancing through the NJPC AIC, proposals will undergo a rigorous review process to assure high quality and strong purpose.

Step-by-step instructions for these processes are found in the Provost’s Office - Curriculum Forms and Resources Canvas site

Course Management

Just as programs evolve, so do courses.  Course Management involves the ongoing maintenance of our course records. This includes creating new courses, revising existing ones, and inactivating courses no longer offered. As the building blocks of our academic programs, courses must be regularly updated to ensure they reflect current and relevant content and that they remain aligned with program learning goals.

New course proposals, course alterations, and course inactivations are submitted into CIM Courses.  Once submitted, each request will follow a multi-level approval process within CIM, ensuring transparency and comprehensive review.
