Faculty Roles and Expectations
Montclair State University recognizes teaching, scholarship, and service as the foundational areas of faculty responsibility and professional contribution. Faculty members are expected to demonstrate ongoing excellence and engagement across these interconnected areas through effective teaching and mentoring, meaningful scholarly or creative activity, and active service to the University, profession, and broader community. These roles and expectations provide the framework for faculty development, evaluation, promotion, and tenure, while supporting the University’s mission of academic excellence, innovation, and public engagement.
Montclair’s faculty vary in discipline, responsibilities, and career stage. These criteria are intended to provide broad guidance, with more specific expectations established at the college, school, and department levels.
For Tenure-Track Faculty, reappointment, tenure, and promotion decisions are generally weighted as 40% Teaching, 40% Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities, and 20% Service, with adjustments made as appropriate for individual roles and responsibilities.
For Teaching Faculty, reappointment and promotion decisions are generally weighted as 80% Teaching and 20% Service, with adjustments made as appropriate for individual roles and responsibilities.
Because faculty work often overlaps across teaching, scholarship, and service, faculty are encouraged to present a clear narrative demonstrating their accomplishments and impact across these areas, supported by appropriate evidence.
