J-1 Student Employment Options
There are three options available for employment for J-1 students. Each type of employment requires authorization. Failure to get proper authorization for each type of employment constitutes a failure to maintain status.
If you are experiencing severe economic hardship, please make an appointment with the Office of Global Engagement for specific information regarding the application process.
J-1 Student Employment Options
-
Academic Training
Academic training is the name the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program uses for off-campus employment or practical experience related to your field of study. Learn more here.
-
Economic Hardship Employment
In some instances, a student who is able to prove severe economic hardship caused by circumstances beyond their control, which arose after obtaining the F-1 students status, may be eligible for permission to work off-campus. Learn more here.
