Comprehensive New Teacher Induction Program
The Comprehensive New Teacher Induction Program offers three years of sustained support for graduates of the Urban Teacher Residency (UTR), Newark Teacher Project (NTP), Urban Teacher Project, and NOYCE Scholarship programs.
Designed in partnership with teachers, schools, and the district, the program provides coaching, professional learning, and collaboration opportunities that strengthen classroom practice and support P–12 student success.
Over time, teachers grow into confident, effective, and engaging professionals.
Why is Induction important?
Induction plays a key role in supporting new teachers as they build confidence and establish their careers in education. Within the Comprehensive New Teacher Induction Program, 95% of participating teachers remained in education for three years or more, and 78% remained for five years or more.
By comparison, the New Jersey Department of Education reports that 40–50% of educators leave the profession within their first five years, with even higher rates in high-need and high-poverty schools. These outcomes highlight the value of sustained, high-quality induction in helping teachers stay in the profession and thrive over time.
Areas of Support
The Comprehensive New Teacher Support Program is built around three key areas of support:
Coaching & Mentoring
As a new teacher, you won't have to navigate your first years alone.
Participants are paired with experienced educators who provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and classroom support. Coaches and school-based mentors work together to help teachers solve challenges, reflect on their practice, and continue growing throughout the year.
Professional Development
Teachers participate in workshops and learning opportunities that address the real challenges they face in the classroom.
Topics may include:
- Lesson planning and instructional strategies
- Classroom management and routines
- Differentiated instruction for diverse learners
- Supporting multilingual learners
- Assessment and meaningful feedback
- Social and emotional learning
- Culturally responsive teaching
- Time management and organization
- Building equitable and inclusive learning communities
- Teacher wellness and self-care
Sessions are designed to provide practical strategies that teachers can immediately apply in their classrooms.
Professional Community & Networking
Teaching can feel isolating, especially during the first few years. That's why the program helps participants build strong professional connections with other educators.
Through networking events, collaborative learning experiences, and cohort activities, teachers develop relationships that provide encouragement, ideas, and support throughout their careers.
Teacher Development Showcase: Stories of Educational Impact and Social Justice
Each May, our first, second, and third year teachers in induction return to Montclair State University to present their year-long projects.
Highlights include reflection letters of advice and lessons learned, findings from classroom inquiry for social justice, social justice leadership projects, and testimonials of new teacher growth and development.
Participants include MSU alumni, recent MSU teacher education graduates, MSU faculty and staff, staff and faculty from partner school districts, and current teachers.
What Are Some Examples of These Projects?
Year 2:
- How collaborative problem solving can increase participation and confidence among students in a geometry class
- Improving participation through mindfulness
- Looking at how addressing the self doubts students hold towards themselves through a social cultural lens can improve their self confidence and academic performance
- Impact of music on writing stamina
- How incorporating social justice into the math curriculum's thinking tasks led to improved student engagement and performance.
Year 3:
- Improving students confidence and competence in STEM through small group tutoring
- Implementation of positive behavioral interventions and supports to improve social emotional competence
- Academic success and school climate
- Using an equity snapshot tool to improve representation in texts
Springs of Hope
As part of the Comprehensive Induction Program, Springs of Hope, led by Sharon Marcus, provides dedicated space for educators to pause, recharge, and reconnect with the values that brought them to the profession.
Grounded in the Seven Sacred Pillars of Transformative Education (B.R.E.A.T.H.E.), this unique experience helps urban educators move beyond survival mode toward sustainable, affirming practice.
Through leadership development, ancestral wisdom, reflection, and community, teachers rediscover their voice, reclaim their joy, and strengthen their capacity to impact future generations—all while honoring the sacred work of teaching.
