Technical Mastery

Students must demonstrate appropriate technical mastery in performance, composition or music technology.

Musical Insight

Students must perform and compose music with artistic excellence, musical understanding, and awareness.

Advanced Knowledge

Students must demonstrate an advanced knowledge and understanding of music.

Research, Analytical, and Writing Skills

Students must develop appropriate research, analytical, and writing skills to examine music effectively.

Cultural Sensitivity

Students must demonstrate appropriate cultural contexts in all their musical endeavors, including the degree recital, thesis, project, clinical experience, or music internship. 

Curricular Completion

Students must demonstrate successful completion of all curricular requirements for their stated program.

Additional Graduation Requirements  

• Students must also meet the MSU GPA requirements for graduation, which are 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students unless their degree program specifies otherwise.
• Undergraduate Music Majors at Montclair State University include:
  • Earning a grade of 1.7 (C-) or higher in all core music courses unless otherwise required by their specific degree program.
  • Earning a grade of 3.0 (B) or higher in applied music.
  • Successful completion of the prescribed curriculum, and at least 120 credits.
