Applied Music Requirements

• Students study with members of the Cali School faculty.
• An applied music fee, in addition to tuition, must be paid for applied music lessons.
• Recital requirements: 
  • Undergraduate students: 1) Performance students present two recitals, one before the end of junior year and the second in the senior year; 2) Music education students present a recital in the senior year; and 3) Composition students present a recital of original compositions in the senior year. 
  • Graduate students: 1) Master of Music and the Artist’s Diploma programs present two degree recitals; 2) M.A. in Composition present one recital.
• Piano students are expected to accompany at a level of ability designated by their teachers.
• Vocal performance majors have vocal coaching requirements in addition to applied music, as do vocal students in other areas who are presenting degree recitals.
• Performance practicums are completed in conjunction with applied music where students typically perform at least once a semester, as determined by faculty.  
• Eligibility:  Students are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to fully participate in applied music lessons. When a student’s GPA falls below this level, applied lessons may be adjusted to allow the student time to focus on improving academic performance.  Similarly, if a student’s applied music grade drops below a B, continued applied study may be reconsidered, and the student’s standing in the major could be affected. Any such decisions will be made collaboratively by the School of Music, the applied music instructor, and the area coordinator. Whenever possible, students will receive a semester of advance notice and guidance to help them address concerns before any changes are implemented.

Applied Music Registration and Assignments

• Assignment of Applied Music and Chamber Ensemble Instruction:  The Cali School director, with coordinators, determines full time faculty load requirements for students registered for Applied Music and/or Chamber Ensembles for the academic year before any instructors assignments are determined. No part-time or visiting specialists are assigned students for applied music lessons until the teaching loads of full-time faculty are filled.  
• Teacher Assignment Determination: Coordinators determine teaching assignments for applied music and share the information with instructors and school administration so that registrations can be updated. 
• Registration Timeline:  Students must be registered by the second week of the semester in order to receive applied music lessons for the semester. Instructors will not be compensated for unregistered students. 
• Applied Music Registration When Instructor Is Undetermined: When a new student’s instructor is not known; students in percussion, guitar, voice, or keyboard concentrations will be registered with the area coordinator; and students in the remaining instrumental concentration will be registered with the  senior member until the student’s faculty assignment has been made.
• Final Teaching Assignment Notification: All coordinators in each area (Woodwinds, Brass, Strings, Percussion, Piano, Voice, Composition, and Guitar) must report final teaching assignments to the director and school administration by the end of the second week of each semester.
• Non-Attendance: For registered students who have not attended any applied music lessons by the third week, the instructor must advise the school administrator by the third week of semester.

Juries

• Juries, final performance-based exams, are a part of applied music and performance practicum courses and occur at the end of each semester.  The jury grade evaluates the work and development completed in the studio during the semester and is factored into the student’s final grade.
• The length of and requirements for juries vary by area. Students work with faculty to choose particular technical studies, scales and repertoire leading to the highest possible level of performance with repertory examples for each level in the course syllabus. (scales and sight-reading may be decided at the jury). Works that were performed at prior juries or recitals should not be repeated unless it is at the suggestion of the instructor.
• Area coordinators communicate the assigned jury dates and times or sign up information.
• The maximum number of semesters of study for each particular major is as follows:
  • Music Therapy Majors—4 semesters
  • Music Education Majors—7 semesters
  • Composition Majors—8 semesters
  • Performance Majors—8 semesters
  • Recording Arts & Production - 4 semesters (no jury)
