Hazing Prevention

Montclair State University makes every effort to create an environment that is fair, humane and respectful for all students, faculty and staff. The University is unconditionally opposed to any activities sponsored by any organization, student athletic team or group of students that involves hazing of any member of the Montclair State University Community.

Hazing Policy Statement

The University prohibits hazing in any form. Hazing is strictly forbidden whether it occurs on or off campus and regardless of an individual’s willingness to participate.

Definition of Hazing and Prohibited Conduct

Hazing is defined as any action or situation, whether occurring on or off campus, in connection with the recruitment, initiation, admission, affiliation, or continued membership in a student organization, that places or may place an individual at risk of physical, emotional, or psychological harm, demonstrates indifference or disregard for the rights, dignity, or well being of another, or violates University policy or applicable law. Consent is not a defense to hazing.

Prohibited conduct includes but is not limited to activities that involve physical harm, psychological distress, coercion, humiliation, degradation, forced or pressured consumption of alcohol or other substances, sleep deprivation, intimidation, restriction of movement or communication, participation in unlawful activities, or any behavior that interferes with an individual’s academic or personal wellbeing.
