From Latvia to Montclair: Fulbright Scholar Evita Meiersone Chooses Cali to Further Her Musical Journey
An accomplished vocalist and educator from Latvia, Evita Meiersone brings her international experience to the John J. Cali School of Music, where she is finding new opportunities to grow as both a performer and teacher.
For Evita Meiersone, music has always been a part of life. Growing up in Latvia, her musical talent was recognized early by a kindergarten teacher who encouraged her to pursue formal training. That encouragement set her on a path that would eventually lead to the Latvian National Opera and Ballet and, most recently, to the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University as a Fulbright Scholar.
Evita studied at Ķekava Music School, Riga Cathedral Choir School, and the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music. Along the way, she performed with choirs, ensembles, and folklore groups while developing a passion for teaching. During her undergraduate studies, she taught voice in several educational settings and began working as an opera choir vocalist with the Latvian National Opera and Ballet, balancing a full-time professional position with her academic work.
Choosing Cali for the Next Chapter
After completing her undergraduate degree, Evita wanted to deepen her knowledge of vocal performance and pedagogy. Encouraged by a teacher, she explored graduate programs in the United States and successfully pursued a Fulbright Scholarship.
She was particularly drawn to Cali's Master of Music in Performance and Pedagogy program, which combines advanced performance training with the study of teaching.
"I chose the John J. Cali School of Music because of the amazing Master of Music in Performance and Pedagogy program," she explains. "Having the opportunity to develop as both a performer and a vocal teacher from such amazing professors is a true privilege."
The program's dual focus aligned closely with her professional experience and aspirations. Cali's masterclasses, guest artists, and performance opportunities further reinforced her decision.
Finding Community and Inspiration
One of the most meaningful surprises for Evita has been the welcoming and collaborative atmosphere at Cali.
"Everybody here is so friendly and welcoming, and it is a pleasure to be part of such a talented and supportive community," she shares.
She finds particular inspiration in learning from faculty who are also active performers, whether on stage at Cali, the Metropolitan Opera, or other venues. She especially appreciates Cali's collaborative approach to vocal education, where multiple professors contribute their expertise and perspectives to each student's development.
For Evita, learning from a team of dedicated faculty is one of the program's greatest strengths. As she puts it, "Singing is a team sport!"
Dr. Lori McCann, Professor of Voice, who teaches Evita in applied voice lessons, shares that enthusiasm.
"Evita brings fine musicianship and comes to every lesson with an inquisitive and positive attitude," says McCann. "She is the type of focused and dedicated student who is able to take full advantage of the integrated teaching and learning we foster at the Cali School, and we are fortunate to have her with us this year as a Fulbright recipient."
For Evita, that combination of individual attention, collaborative learning, and a supportive musical community has made her graduate experience especially rewarding.
"The unique classroom atmosphere makes me feel so motivated, inspired and supported in my studies," she says. "I look forward to every lesson with a huge smile on my face."
A Rewarding New Chapter
For Evita, studying at Cali has been rewarding both musically and personally. Working with accomplished faculty, connecting with fellow musicians, and experiencing a new country have made her Fulbright experience especially meaningful.
"The most rewarding part of the Fulbright program is the everyday experience," she says. "Every day brings something new to appreciate, learn and be grateful for."
From her early musical training in Latvia to the professional opera stage, Evita brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the Cali community. Her decision to pursue graduate studies at Montclair reflects the School's ability to attract accomplished international musicians seeking to advance both their artistry and teaching.
For Evita, Cali has become more than a place to continue her education. It is a supportive musical community where she feels inspired, challenged, and excited about what comes next.
