Two productions from the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University have earned Second Place honors in The American Prize, a national competition recognizing excellence in the performing arts. The 2024-25 productions of Hansel & Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck and La Calisto by Francesco Cavalli were both recognized in the Opera Performance: College/University (Smaller Program) division, following their earlier selection as national finalists.

Directed by Karen Driscoll and conducted by William Hobbs, Hansel & Gretel brought Humperdinck’s beloved fairy-tale opera to life in a vibrant production. La Calisto, directed by Rebecca Jo Loeb and conducted by Kyle Ritenauer, presented Cavalli’s celebrated opera for contemporary audiences.

The awards recognize the talent, dedication and collaboration of the students and artistic teams involved in both productions, including the student performers, orchestra musicians, production staff and colleagues whose work brings Cali Opera performances to the stage.

The American Prize is a national, nonprofit competition that recognizes outstanding achievement in the performing arts. Its college and university divisions provide opportunities for student ensembles, conductors, opera companies and other academic performing arts programs to receive national recognition for their work.
