“How to Nourish your Body: Status and Social Conflict in Ancient Foods,” April 4, 2022
Faculty, students, and guests explored the complexities of food, class, and social status in ancient Rome during a presentation by Dr. Charles Feldman of Montclair State University's Department of Nutrition and Food Studies on April 4, 2022.
The talk examined the dining customs of wealthy Romans and the challenges they faced in balancing displays of wealth with traditional Roman values. While imported delicacies could showcase status and affluence, they also risked being viewed as excessive, whereas simpler meals might fail to impress guests. Through this lens, attendees gained insight into how food reflected the cultural expectations, social hierarchy, and values of Roman society.
