Gabriel Kahane Shares His Creative Journey at the Cali School of Music
On Wednesday, September 2, the John J. Cali School of Music welcomed Gabriel Kahane, Artist-in-Residence, as part of its Midweek Series. Hosted by Dr. Aaron Helgeson, the event brought together students, faculty, and musicians for a conversation about Kahane’s career and creative journey.
Kahane reflected on his early experiences with music, beginning with violin before transitioning to piano and eventually discovering a passion for singing. His vocal training led to opportunities in opera, including a role with the Houston Grand Opera.
Growing up, Kahane was surrounded by a wide range of musical influences. His father was a concert conductor, while his mother was a psychologist, and both also played in rock bands. Beyond music, Kahane developed interests in theater and chess, reflecting the diverse creative pursuits that would eventually shape his career.
In his 20s, Kahane was told that his many interests could make it difficult for people to understand exactly who he was as an artist:
“You’ve chosen a difficult path, you’re writing for the theater, writing famous songs, and writing music, making it potentially harder for people to understand who you are, but it’ll work in the end.”
Rather than narrowing his focus, Kahane embraced his multidisciplinary approach. He encouraged students to recognize and work with their own creative strengths, emphasizing that artists do not have to limit themselves to one discipline. His message was to embrace the way their minds work and allow their varied interests to become part of their identity as creative artists.
