Discovering classical New York

The Department of Classics and General Humanities and the Institute for the Humanities hosted a Zoom discussion on October 13, 2022, featuring Matthew McGowan, co-editor of Classical New York: Discovering Greece and Rome in Gotham (Fordham University Press, 2018).

During the conversation, McGowan discussed the inspiration behind the collection of essays and his own contribution to the volume, which explores how “the visual language of Greek and Roman Antiquity” shaped some of New York’s most iconic buildings, public monuments, and civic spaces. He also answered questions from attendees about the enduring influence of the classical world on the city’s architecture and public landscape.
