Chris Opperman and His Band Bring an Eclectic Musical Experience to Leshowitz Hall
On October 8 at 8 p.m., composer, pianist, and adjunct professor in the John J. Cali School of Music Chris Opperman and his band took the stage at Leshowitz Hall for a concert welcoming friends, family, and Montclair State University students. Featuring Opperman on piano, Jordan Shapiro on electric mandolin and keyboard, Max Kutner on electric guitar, Rich Rakowski on tenor saxophone, Jeff Little on electric bass, and Gregg Bendian on drums, the ensemble delivered an evening celebrating Opperman’s imaginative compositions and eclectic musical influences.
Blending elements of jazz and rock, the first set featured a dozen instrumental pieces, including the notable 12-minute composition “Flight of the Cuckoo.” The music moved between softer, more introspective passages and energetic arrangements that showcased the full ensemble. Each piece offered its own character while contributing to a cohesive musical experience. Standout solos, including performances by Bendian on drums and Opperman on piano, highlighted the musicians’ individual talents and drew enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Between selections, Opperman brought warmth and humor to the performance, sharing anecdotes and offering insight into the structure of his compositions. These moments added a personal dimension to the concert, connecting the audience with both the music and the musicians behind it.
Following a brief intermission, the second set introduced a surprise guest performer. Perla Villacampa, revealed as the band’s seventh member, joined the ensemble on acoustic guitar and vocals. Her performances of songs associated with artists such as The Monkees and Mazzy Star brought a fresh energy to the evening, offering a shift in style that rounded out the concert.
The performance celebrated not only the musicians’ versatility and skill but also the power of music to connect audiences across generations. Through his compositions and collaborative approach, Opperman demonstrated both artistic range and a generosity of spirit, creating space for each band member to shine.
Concerts like this reflect the College of the Arts’ commitment to bringing engaging, diverse musical experiences to the Montclair State University community.
