Jonathan Howell, Ph.D. (Linguistics), Language, Belonging and Linguistic Justice at Montclair State University

Dr. Howell’s project seeks to advance linguistic justice at Montclair State University, to create a campus where students’ full linguistic repertoires are welcomed and valued. Although language is one of the most powerful markers of identity, higher education rarely examines how linguistic norms and biases affect student success. This initiative addresses that gap by assessing linguistic diversity on campus, documenting language attitudes, and collaborating with students, faculty, and campus leaders to create sustainable, scalable interventions.
