Multilingual learners make up a significant part of our CSAM student community, bringing valuable perspectives, experiences, and language resources to our classrooms. How can we better support their learning as they engage with the concepts and specialized language of science and mathematics?

Claire Donohue from the Department of Teaching and Learning, an educator whose expertise spans supporting multilingual learners from kindergarten through college, will share practical strategies that faculty can use in college classrooms and offer insight into the English language acquisition process. Drawing on her work with learners across educational levels, she will help us consider how our teaching can make disciplinary ideas more accessible and support students in communicating their understanding.

These approaches have value for all learners. Strategies that support multilingual students also strengthen classroom communication, clarify expectations, and help more students participate meaningfully in learning. This session offers an opportunity to explore simple adjustments that can make a difference across our courses.

Coffee, tea, and light refreshments will be provided!
