Join the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs for The Wide World of Ideas, a new speaker series bringing the University community together to explore timely questions, emerging ideas and new perspectives shaping our world.

Educator, ethicist and author Mark Peres will lead “A New Story for the Age of AI: When Intelligence Is No Longer Exclusively Human.” Drawing on philosophy, technology, literature and cultural analysis, Peres will examine how increasingly capable artificial intelligence is challenging more than our rules for governing technology–it may require us to reconsider the story we tell about ourselves and our place in the world. As distinctions between person and tool, relationship and simulation, and autonomy and dependence become increasingly difficult to define, Peres invites us to consider a larger question: What kind of ethical framework do we need for a world in which humans may no longer be the only meaningful participants?

This event offers an opportunity to put the University's Professional Curiosity capability into practice by asking questions, exploring new perspectives and considering how AI is shaping our world.

His latest novel, The Accord, examines the future of human-AI relations and the choices that shape our humanity.
