Honors Resources for Current Students

Your Honors curriculum is designed to complement your major while helping you build creativity, leadership, and community engagement.

All Honors EDGE students are required to complete a minimum of eight courses during your time at Montclair. Four are required at the core, three of which satisfy SEEDS General Education requirements, with the final four being completed through a selection of elective Honors Seminars:

  • Satisfies SEEDS Explorations: Analyzing Cultures and Societies.
• HONP 107 - Community Matters
  • Satisfies SEEDS Foundations: Political and Civic Life.
• HONP 108 - Transformations
  • Satisfies SEEDS Foundations: Effective Writing II.
• HONP 490 - Capstone
  • Taken during your final year of study at Montclair.

• HONP 105 - Seminar in Computing
• HONP 201 - Seminar in Creative Process
• HONP 202 - Seminar in Contemporary American Issues

  • Topics vary by instructor each semester.

Honors EDGE students receive a $60 book credit for each honors course in which they are enrolled to help offset the cost of required course materials.

This credit is applied directly to your student account for use at the University Bookstore and cannot be used for anything outside of the required materials for your honors course(s). 

All Honors EDGE students receive Priority Registration every semester, allowing you to register for your courses earlier each semester.

You can receive your Priority Registration PIN from your academic advisor during a scheduled appointment.

In order to complete the Honors EDGE Program at Montclair, students must finish their undergraduate degree coursework with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 and successfully complete a minimum of eight Honors courses (including the required core). 

The Honors Executive Board is a student-led organization that helps shape your Honors EDGE experience through programming, events, and community-building initiatives.

The Honors Peer Mentoring Program connects experienced Honors students with new, first-year students to provide guidance, support and community throughout the Honors EDGE experience. Peer Mentors develop valuable leadership skills while helping fellow students navigate their academic journey.

If you're interested in becoming a Peer Mentor, you should consider enrolling in HONP 310 - Mentoring, a one-credit course designed to prepare you for your role as a mentor while providing academic credit for your leadership experience.

Our Honors Student Lounge is a dedicated space for our students to study, collaborate, take a break, and connect with members of the Honors community. 

The Lounge is located in University Hall, Room 2104 and can be used for:

• Studying and completing coursework
• Meeting with classmates and peers
• Connecting with staff and the community
• Relaxing between classes, grabbing a snack, making hot tea or coffee, and more!

During your first year as an Honors student, you will take two of your four required courses: HONP 106 - Creativity and HONP 108 - Transformations.

It is also advised that you register for an Honors-specific section of WRIT 105 - College Composition I during your first semester, unless you have already tested out of it or completed it another institution.

After your first year, you will select and take a minimum of four single-semester honors electives and your remaining two core courses, HONP 107 - Community Matters and HONP 490 - Capstone (to be taken during your final year of study). 

Students may also apply to substitute experiential learning opportunities for elective credit after your first year.

Honors students receive a $60-per-honors course book credit to help purchase required course materials at the start of each semester. Enrollment in one HONP course results in a $60 credit, enrollment in two HONP courses is $120, and so on. 

Using Your Book Credit:

Book credits will be applied to your student account as "Red Hawk Restricted," not Red Hawk Dollars. Students must notify the cashier at the Bookstore that you wish to use these in order for your credit(s) to be applied.

Honors Book Credit Restrictions:

• Book credits are only available for courses coded as HONP. They cannot be used for non-honors coursework.
• Book credits are designated for Honors course materials exclusively (e.g., textbooks) and cannot be used for anything else.

Non-honors courses cannot count towards Honors course requirements. However, select Honors courses can fulfill some non-honors course.

No. Depending on what you have already fulfilled from your prior institution(s) will determine how much can fulfill Honors EDGE requirements.

Yes. Since HONP 108 is part of the required Honors core curriculum, it cannot be waived even if you have tested out of college composition courses.
