About Our Department

The Department of Sociology, Criminology and Justice Studies examines the forces that shape society, human behavior, social institutions, crime, law and systems of justice. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives, the department explores how social relationships, policies and institutions influence individual lives and communities while addressing some of society’s most pressing challenges, including inequality, human rights, public safety, social change and justice.

Faculty and students investigate a wide range of topics, from race, gender, health, immigration and environmental justice to criminology, criminal justice, law and public policy. Through research, community engagement, internships and experiential learning, students develop the analytical, research and critical thinking skills needed to understand complex social issues and evaluate solutions from multiple perspectives.

The department supports both undergraduate and graduate study through rigorous training in social research methods, data collection, analysis and interpretation. Students and researchers engage with qualitative and quantitative approaches, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, ethnographic research and data analytics, preparing them to contribute meaningful insights to academic, public, private and nonprofit sectors.
