About the School
Interdisciplinary by nature, the School for the Humanities provides a rigorous scholarly environment within which students can discover and define their relation to past and present; to politics and religion; to art, language, and technology; and to themselves. Humanities is the intellectual, expressive, and creative nexus that links all of the activity in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Embrace the humanities, embrace the whole world. Learn one—or more!—of the 13 languages, ancient and modern, we teach and immerse yourself in cultures around the globe. Take advantage of our many study abroad opportunities. Enter the minds of the greatest philosophers, writers, artists, and filmmakers of the past and present. Analyze the power of religion as a dynamic and global factor in historical and contemporary affairs. Read, write, study, and collaborate with the nearly 60 permanent faculty members in the School for the Humanities. Our Departments
Each department in the School contributes a distinct but interconnected perspective on how ideas, texts, languages, and cultural practices travel among, transform, and shape individuals and societies. Together, we conceive and pursue research and teaching initiatives that seek to spark the intellectual imagination of our students, our faculty, and the wider Montclair community.
Classics, Humanities and Philosophy
Classics, Humanities, and Philosophy brings together disciplines dedicated to examining the human experience through culture, history, ideas and critical inquiry. Drawing from both the humanities and philosophy, the department encourages students to explore enduring questions about human societies, belief systems, ethics, justice, truth and what it means to live thoughtfully in a complex world.
English
The English Department is a vibrant community of teachers and students devoted to the study of literature, language, and culture. English majors pursue an engaging course of study that is intellectually rigorous yet flexible and dynamic. Students develop higher-level writing and thinking skills that support careers in teaching, publishing, law, journalism, communications, the mental health professions and business.
Global Cultural Studies
The Department of Global Cultural Studies examines the languages, cultures, religions and identities that connect people and communities across the world. Language study serves as a foundation for the department's work, providing pathways to understanding diverse cultures, histories, traditions and ways of knowing.
