Bloomfield College Library Marks End of Spring Term with Celebrations and Supporting Campus Traditions

Bloomfield College Library hosted student-centered events, supported academic achievement, and were honored to serve as a space for several important campus traditions. We also celebrated libraries, neurodiversity, and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

National Library Week

Deacon and Rocky visited BCL as we kicked off our National Library Week celebration. This year’s theme was “Find Your Joy” and we invited students, faculty, staff, and members of the community to draw, color, write a poem, or make a bookmark or zine to show their love for libraries. 

Take a Child to Work Day

On Take a Child to Work Day, Cynthia Walker presented a morning and an afternoon Storytime for children. Children also did some coloring and made their own bookmarks.

Stress Less Fest

BCL participated in Counseling and Psychological Services’ Stress Less Fest to support mental health outreach. Library student workers ran games and distributed prizes alongside TRIO SSS. 

Stress-free Zone

During Stress-free Zone week, BCL provided snacks as well as a range of activities to help students relax and decompress, such as coloring, 3D puzzles, Legos, and games. In addition, blankets and pillows selected by the Libraries’ Wellness Committee created a cozy environment for studying. 

End-of-the-Year Raffle

As part of these end-of-the-the-year activities, BCL held a raffle. The winners of the raffle are as follows:

• 2nd place (magnet) - Michael Vega
• 3rd place (keychain) - Brandon Holley

Exhibits

Exhibits around the library embraced neurodiversity as a celebration of difference and honored Asian-American and Pacific Islander heritage.

Extended hours

Extended hours provided students with the opportunity to stay later and/or visit during weekend hours for a quiet place to study, or to use the computer lab. We were happy to see steady use of all the library’s study spaces and laptop borrowing taking place in increasing numbers as well.

Admitted Students Day

On Admitted Students Day, Research & Instruction Librarian Melissa John shared about library resources, services, and spaces.  

Nursing Capstone

BCL served as the venue for Nursing Capstone presentations. It was a standing room only on the first floor as students shared their research with faculty and staff, other nursing students, friends, and more. 

Creative Arts & Technology (CAT) Capstone

The Kaplan Art Gallery at BCL also showcased the creative works of Bloomfield College students in graphic design, gaming, animation, and art for the Creative Arts & Technology (CAT) Capstone. 

Baccalaureate Ceremony

BCL was honored to be designated the starting place for the Baccalaureate Ceremony. We saw graduating students, their family and friends, and other members of the Bloomfield College community gather for a ceremonial procession. Led by the very vibrant Malcolm X. Shabazz High School Drumline, this was a moment of school spirit, unity, reflection, and celebration. We honor the hard work and achievements of our graduates and wish them all the best in their future endeavors! 

Get Ready for Summer Day

After finals, we introduced a Get Ready for Summer Day, where students, faculty, and staff could learn about the museum passes and streaming media platforms offered by University Libraries, as well as reciprocal borrowing privileges they can all take advantage of throughout Essex County.
