A Spooky Look Back at Halloween Celebrations Throughout Montclair’s History.
Halloween, a holiday favorite! Ghouls and ghosts, candy and bobbing for apples. The fun doesn’t stop, especially for our current Red Hawks! But those of today are not the only people who enjoyed the thrills and chills of Halloween. Let’s take a dive into the archives to learn about the Ghost of Montclair’s Past.
The earliest Halloween themed item within our archives is a hand-painted Halloween party invitation from 1914.
Later on, accounts of Halloween can be found within the 1932 and 1933 yearbooks.
Wait, does that say High School? Yes! Morehead Hall, at the time, was known as College High School, a functioning 'demonstration' high school.
Also in 1932, an account of the Junior-Frosh Masquerade is told in The Pelican (now Montclarion) newspaper.
And it comes as no surprise, the majority of photographs and stories of Halloween at Montclair are of students in costume at Halloween parties, known for a time as “The Halloween Catacomb”, so please enjoy this compilation!
