"Phaedra" by Elizabeth Egloff

Set in a timeless, surreal Mediterranean landscape, "Phaedra" by Elizabeth Egloff is a reimagining of the classical myth that shifts the focus from grand public tragedy to a deeply personal experience of solitude, longing, and memory. The story is told by a mysterious Narrator who is haunted by the memory of Phaedra, a Queen paralyzed by a forbidden passion for her stepson, Hippolytus. As Phaedra languishes on her daybed, attended by her Nurse and observed by a chatty, opinionated Chorus, the world around her takes on a dreamlike quality where a sewing machine clatters with the rhythm of a heart and the landscape is an itemization of blue, leaving every character adrift in a sea of unrequited memory. When Phaedra finally breaks her silence to confront Hippolytus, her confession leads not to connection but to a psychic "emptying" of herself. The play concludes with the Narrator left in his own solitude, haunted by the echoes of those who have passed away.
